Is handwriting going out of style? Since the advent of digital tablets and mobile phones, children are spending less and less time writing by hand. Touch and computer keyboards have become the preferred way for both children and adults to write. According to experts, less importance is now attached to handwriting and many children end up having difficulty even reading their own handwriting.

However, an Indiana University neurological study of 5 year olds shows that handwriting activates new areas of the brain not involved in typing. For example, when writing by hand we have to locate each stroke in relation to the other strokes, learn and remember the size of the letter and make precise movements with our hand. All of this enhances cognitive functions in our brain that are very important in stimulating learning.
